They’ll set a specific deadline then you can complete the work when you like as long as you hit the deadline. Their 2 stage recruitment process including an initial 5 minute screening test, followed by a paid assessment and training period with live files. You’ll also undergo data security and CRB checks. Free ongoing training and recognised accreditation is provided. |

Recruitment includes 4 tests; typing speed, English language, formatting and audio transcription. They require that you have MS Word software but will provide you with their own transcription software free. They operate on four shifts (morning, day, evening and weekend), and you’ll be expected to work at least two shifts per week. Transcribers are given work at the start of the shift for completion within that shift. Payment is from 45p per audio minute for the easier work. You could be sent up to 2 hours audio per day, which they expect to equate to 6-8 hours work. That would amount to about £6.75 – £9 per hour of your time, depending on how fast you are. |
![]() | Take1 TranscriptionSuper fast 80wpm audio typists for interesting TV transcription work. You need to be available at least 20 hours per week. Requires Windows 7, 8 or 10 system. Initial recruitment is with a spelling and grammar test plus your CV. You’ll then be paid to complete their free online training which they expect you to complete over a week. Rates start at around 40p per audio minute, increasing to 60p-80p per audio minute after the ‘bedding in’ period. |

The more demanding the work, the higher the rates. Automatic payments to your bank or paypal – no need to invoice. Recruitment is by copy typing and audio typing tests, followed by paid trial files. |

If you also have experience within their specialist areas you’ll have access to better paying work. Work for Sterling can be as an individual freelancer or a small business with your own employees. Minimum 10 hours per week commitment. Requires at least 60 wpm, at least 97% accuracy, and skilled use of MS Word. Higher education qualifications preferred. You’ll need to take a hearing test, typing test and quality assurance test. |

![]() | ScribieScribie are a US company who pay in USD via Paypal. Payment is automatic and you can withdraw it any time you like. Their pay rates are definitely at the lower end of the scale at 5c-$20 for a six minute audio file. There are several levels of work, and you can gain promotion up to proofreading and quality control, which pay the higher rates – although most workers will never get access to the best rates. However, it’s relatively simple to get on their books and there’s no minimum time requirement. You can pick up as many or as few 6 minute files as you like. So many people see Scribie as a good starting point to get going with transcription work. NB Scribie have some really good resources on their site to help you practise and decide if transcription work is for you. |

It’s easy to sign up with just an English test to pass. Payment is in USD to your paypal account. Starting rates are low at $20 per audio hour (ie about $4-$7 per hour of your time), but you can earn promotion to better paying work. They say their average worker earns $250 per month, and the top ones over $2000 a month. |
